On its surface, this ancient coin of Poseidon is a masterwork befitting the powerful Greek god of the seas. But just like Poseidon's watery realm, there is a treasury of deeper historical meaning and context hidden just beneath the waves.

Issued during the reign of Hieron II, this 2200-year-old coin was struck in the ancient city of Syracuse, a bustling maritime metropolis where the mythology of Poseidon held much sway. Syracuse was also the birthplace of the preeminent mathematician and engineer Archimedes. And according to Plutarch, the scholar's scientific discoveries and links to King Hieron were just as legendary as the sea god's feats of strength.

When King Hieron believed he was being cheated by a local goldsmith, he set Archimedes to the task of finding the truth. Legend says that Archimedes discovered the principle of displacement (the very principle that enabled him to prove the goldsmith's thievery) while settling into a bathtub. So pleased was he with the discovery, he is said to have run naked through the streets of Syracuse shouting, "Eureka!"

Rich in mythological motifs, rooted in historical significance and scientific discovery, this ancient coin of Poseidon is a rare treasure. Struck of solid bronze, it features a portrait of the bearded Poseidon on its obverse, while the reverse bears the god's powerful trident, flanked by sleek dolphins. Though over two millennia have passed, these coins are well preserved, with all details clearly recognizable.
