It is truly a tale as old as time -- the innocent allure of noble Beauty, the terrifying visage of an enchanted Beast.
Rooted in the Greek legend of Eros and Psyche, these timeless themes have fascinated mankind throughout history, appearing frequently in the art and culture of the ancient world. Now you can experience their enduring power first-hand, immortalized in a solid silver coin from ancient Greece.
Issued in the 4th to 3rd century BC, this silver hemidrachm was struck in Sikyon, the oldest city-state in ancient Greece, recognized as the cradle of Western arts. On its obverse is a stylized dove in flight -- a beautiful emblem of the city, symbolizing the soaring spirit of her people. In contrast, the reverse bears an image of the legendary chimera, an afire-breathing beast with the body of a lion, the tail of a serpent and the head of a goat.
NOTE: Each coin is unique and guaranteed in its authenticity, not a restrike or reproduction. Images are for illustration only; actual coin may vary.
