The B-25 Mitchell is actually an offshoot of the earlier XB-21 concept plane that was developed by North American Aviation during the mid-1930s. The first prototype, called the NA-40, bore considerable similarities with the XB-21 during the early stages. But re-modifications, which included a new engine (the Wright R-2600 radial engine), soon distinguished the plane from its predecessor and created the B-25 look. The plane gained attention when it was submitted to the US Army Air Corps in 1939 to be evaluated as an attack bomber. After seeing pleasant results, the NA-40 was approved and ordered into production as the North American B-25. Production officially began in 1942 with the most units coming from Kansas City. Production was sped up due to the impeding war; thus no experimental versions or units were built. All B-25 Mitchell bombers that were created went straight to the military. Any changes or possible upgrades were done on-the-spot with the hope that the plane would not suddenly explode during modification.
