Imagine walking around Gettysburg, Pennsylvania and spotting an Indian Head penny half buried in the ground where the Union and Confederate soldiers battled during the American Civil War. Perhaps that Indian Head Cent first minted in 1859 at the Philadelphia Mint fell out of the pocket of a Union soldier, possibly a lucky coin. Or maybe it dropped from the hands of a passerby who came to visit the battlefields in 1864 either way, the Indian Head Cent minted from 1859 to 1864 was composed of copper and nickel and commonly referred to as Nickel or Nick.
