The lack of the word cents on the first year of issue 1883 nickel created the opportunity for corrupt and crafty individuals to scam merchants and other members of the public. In 1883 the new nickel so resembled the $5 gold piece, one only had to paint the nickel gold and cut the edges. The coin became known as the Racketeer Nickel. Con artists paid for goods using the Racketeer nickel as a $5 gold piece and would pocket the change. The mint soon released the error and added the word cents. The 1883 First Year of Issue Gold Layered Liberty Racketeer Nickel is handsomely displayed in a gold tone money clip. The money clip measures approximately 1 7/8 inches. A Certificate of Authenticity is included.
