Designed by famous American artist, James Earl Fraser and minted from 1913 to 1938, the Buffalo Nickel is considered the most distinctively American of all coin designs. Fraser patterned the Indian profile on the obverse of the nickel, from the faces of three different Native Americans – John Big Tree, an Iroquois; Two Moons, a Cheyenne; and Iron Tail, a Teton Sioux. For the coin’s reverse, Fraser ventured no further than the Central Park Zoo in midtown New York, where the docile bull bison named Black Diamond became the model for one of America’s most beloved coins. The "Legend of the Buffalo Nickel” collection is displayed in a book-style portfolio and includes six genuine Buffalo Nickels from the 1910’s, 1920’s and 1930’s. Each of the three U.S. Mints are represented by the mint mark on the coin’s reverse; Philadelphia, Denver and San Francisco. Also included is a Certificate of Authenticity which states that these are genuine U.S. Mint coins that have been inspected by a professional numismatist and verified to be in collectible condition.
