The Penny Black Stamp is known as the world's first adhesive postage stamp used in a public postal system. It was issued in Britain in 1840 and features an image of Queen Victoria. The words "One Penny" shown at the bottom of the stamp signify the amount of the pre-paid postage placed on the stamped letter. The Penny Black Stamp was issued for less than one year as it was hard to see the red cancellation mark after being used for postage. The Penny Black Stamp comes in a protective clear vinyl wallet. A Certificate of Authenticity is included.
